Twentieth Century Decline
In the twentieth century Wales went into decline. Foreign competition and development of alternative sources of power saw the death knell of the coal industry - with the last coal mines in South Wales closing shortly after the national miners’ strike of 1984-5. Despite European aid, no larger scale alternative industries have emerged. Unemployment is currently around 135, 000 or 9%.
