Rugby Union:
- Although football has always been played by more people in Wales, rugby union is regarded as the national sport of Wales.
- It started to be played in Wales in 1870s, and remained an amateur game until 1995.
- It was ideally suited to physically strong men who had spent their working week underground.
- Wales has enjoyed many years of success. The national team was most successful in the 1970s- but they have won three "Grand Slams" (beating England, Ireland, Scotland, France and Italy) in recent years (2005, 2008, and 2012).
- They play home games at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff, which has a capacity of 74,500.
- Many of the Welsh rugby players play it abroad for example Jon Davies in ASM Clermont Auvergne in France.
