Normans in Wales 1066- 1283
By 1093 the Normans had conquered the whole Wales and built castles to retain control - including one in Cardiff. William the Conqueror rewarded his lords with land in Wales. By 1200 most of these lands had been won back by Welsh, Llywelyn Fawr (Llywelyn the Great) was the ruler of the whole Wales at the time of his death in 1240. Dolwyddelan was one of Llywelyn the Great’s castles in the north. After his death the king of England did their best to conquer Wales.
