Riots and Risings
Conditions in the new industrial areas, as well as rural areas, led to unrest from the 1830s. The longest- lasting strike in the history of Britain was in the slate industry and it began in 1900 the Penrhyn Quarry, Bethesda in Wales. It lasted three years. Tensions between the community and strike-breakers were high and the houses of striking men displayed cards with the words ‘Nid oes Bradwr yn y Tŷ Hwn’ (There is no traitor in this house) in the window (picture 60).
