Early Medieval Wales c. 700- 1066
- Offa, King of Mercia 757-796, built a huge earthwork boundary 240 kilometres long on the border between Wales and England.
- During this period there was no single ruler of Wales, the closest being Rhodri Mawr (Rhodri the Great) who, between 844 and his death in 878, brought much of the country under his control.
- Rhodri Mawr’s grandson Hywel Dda (Howel the Good) formed Deheubarth and introduced the laws of Hywel Dda in c. 950. They lasted until 1282.
- Gruffyddap Llyweyn was the ruler of the whole Wales by 1055, but was defeated by the English in 1063 and killed by his own men.
