The Romans and Isca (Caerleon)
Caerleon (Isca) houses one of only three permanent Roman Legionary Fortresses in Britain. It was the headquarters of the second Augustan legion from c. AD 75 - c. AD 300 (around 6,000 men). It is likely that there was no native resistance from c. AD 130. Recent archeologically work suggests it could have been a huge town of 30,000 inhabitants. The Romans are the ones likely to have brought Christianity to Wales. The only town built by the Romans was Caewent (Venta Silurum).
